Luing cattle are a Scottish breed, developed by crossing Highland cows with Shorthorn bulls. They combine the toughness of Highlanders with the meat quality and milking ability of Shorthorns. Bred for hill farming, Luings are known for being hardy, fertile, and calm — ideal traits for working with nature, not against it. They’re well suited to rough ground and unpredictable weather.
When we took over the farm in January 2025, there were no cattle left on the land. Wanting a hardy breed suited to the hill ground, we chose Luings for their resilience and easy nature. We started with 9 bulling heifers, 5 in-calf heifers, and a bull — a strong foundation for building the herd. It’s been rewarding to see them settle and thrive on the place.
We hope to gradually grow our herd and make the most of their natural grazing abilities. By managing them carefully, we aim to improve biodiversity — from hill pasture to native woodland edges. We're also breeding for temperament, hardiness, and strong maternal instincts to create a herd that fits well with the land and with our system.
