Scottish Blackface are one of the most iconic hill breeds in the UK, known for their hardiness, strong maternal instincts, and ability to thrive in tough upland conditions. With their distinctive appearance and resilience, they’re ideally suited to managing rough grazing and harsh weather. Traditionally kept for both meat and wool, they’re a breed that has earned its place on the hill.
When we took on the farm, we also kept the existing flock of Scottish Blackface sheep from David Murray. These sheep are hefted to the hill, meaning they instinctively stay within their traditional grazing areas without the need for fencing. It’s a strong, established flock, and we feel lucky to continue its legacy.
We aim to continue David’s high standards by breeding sheep with strong character, good mothering ability, and natural hardiness. Keeping the flock healthy is a top priority — we regularly screen for disease and maintain careful management. Our goal is a flock that not only thrives on the hill but also supports long-term sustainability and animal welfare.
